Demo review: Roudansirppi – III (2019)

Roudansirppi – III – Demo (2019)

Finland

Hessian Firm

Raw black metal would be a good place to start when describing Roudansirppi's music. Their latest demo features four lengthy tracks of mournful, atmospheric black metal that takes us back to the old days. Each song is comprised of despondent screams, buzzing guitars, and an atmosphere that conjures images of vast and barren landscapes. The music is decidedly primitive, but also cohesive, supplemented with a low-fi production that is sure to please diehard fans. You basically have all the hallmarks of classic black metal written all over this, but minus the Satanism. The band also incorporates some keyboards and clean vocals here and there, which is a nice touch and adds depth to the music. Overall, the material on this demo is quite strong, as “III” is a release that will find its appeal among fans of the most cult and austere type of black metal. The CD can be obtained through Hessian Firm. Album review: Angelgoat - Primitive Goat Worship (2017)

Angelgoat – Primitive Goat Worship - Full Length (2017)

Serbia

Grom Records

"Primitive Goat Worship" is Angelgoat's second full length, and was released by Grom Records in 2017. I like all the band's releases, but this is my favourite from them. This is also their heaviest and most evil sounding record in my opinion. If you look at the band's song titles and imagery, it's quite evident that the band is about one thing and one thing only: the adoration of Satan and darkness. Now to the average person this might seem like some cheap gimmick, although I can assure you, the band is deadly serious about their craft. Fortunately, the music also speaks for itself, as "Primitive Goat Worship" offers a style of no-frills black metal that's about as true to the genre as it gets. A very raw and apocalyptic atmosphere permeate this album, with songs comprised of heavily distorted guitars, maniacal screams, and an incredibly menacing bass tone. The drumming is also very well-performed and vigorously drives the music at militant speeds, but also switches it up enough to keep it interesting. This is master-class black metal and while there's nothing really “innovative” about it, the music has a propensity for sounding deliciously and fiercely evil. Musically, Angelgoat can be compared to bands like (old) Darkthrone, Maniac Butcher, (old) Mayhem, Goat Semen, Archgoat, etc., without actually sounding like those bands. Sure, there's a commonality as far as playing black metal, but Angelgoat has a distinct sound that also borrows a lot from classic speed metal and thrash. I love the guitar tone on this album. Worth mentioning is the fact that all instruments were performed by one sole maniac known as Unholy Carnager. That being said, he definitely did a terrific job. All in All, this is an essential album and recommended for maniacs into primitive and ugly black metal. (HT)

ALBUM REVIEW: Angelgoat - The Lucifer Within (2020)

Angelgoat - The Lucifer Within (2020)

Serbia

Morbid Chapel Records

The Serbian elite known as Angelgoat, return with their third full-length album entitled, "The Lucifer Within," offering 10 tracks of filthy old-school black metal that goes straight for the jugular. The band employs devilish pounding drums, evil shrieking vocals, and a blasphemous guitar tone that makes angels weep. Those seeking sumptuous production values and pretty melodies better stay clear as Angelgoat unleashes a barrage of primitive metal that pulls you straight into the abyss. The music itself is pretty basic and derivative, but what they lack in terms of originality, they sure as hell make up for with pure evil devotion and well-executed songs. Stylistically, they give nods to bands like Bathory, Kreator, Poison (Deu), Mayhem, Archgoat, etc. This is traditional black metal in the purest sense that doesn't pander to any wimpy trends. Those with an affinity for the uglier side of black metal (particularly Deathcrush era Mayhem) will no doubt enjoy this output, as the band plays a kind of metal that transports you back to the genre's heyday.
