Interview: Bestial Holocaust (2021)

The following interview was done with Sonya Sepulchral - former vocalist of Bolivian Black/Thrash cult Bestial Holocaust.

Hails S.S.!!! How do you find yourself in these turbulent times of uncertainty, where our lives are governed by institutions and monarchies that seek to impose their pernicious laws upon us? Are we truly “free” as humans?

S.S. - Greetings HT! There are constant changes to which one must adapt to. My life continues connected with my passions between music, art and other important aspects. However, it has been hard to cope with the situation mainly due to the economic factor. Humans again have to learn to live with another planned virus, one more pandemic in our world history. I am part of a society with its rules all over the place, with its religious foundations that are divided for each weak and fickle human species. I am in the opposite current and I am proud to have been consistent in all these years of struggle against the system, my own family and third parties who tried to break my ideals, I will never be part of them in their beliefs and much less allow myself to be manipulated with stupid speeches ever. No human being is free if he is not a master of himself. Today the word "freedom" is used and exalted as a fundamental principle, a word that is sealed in everyone's mouth. There are those who export this word through war to bring "democracy", there are those who created this pandemic to wallow freedom for shitty money, there are those who cause chaos in the imperious freedom, some drown their own lives in drugs to feel free, others reach the orgasm of freedom by putting a bullet in their own skull. In an age where technology behaves like human beings and humans look like robots, we are constantly being hunted by those who want absolute dominance. We are part of their political plan and they try to distract us all the damn time. Those who don't understand are lost in mental slavery.

What's the main motivation for expressing yourself through such a fanatical outlet such as Black Metal?

S.S.- There are ideological positions that simply cannot be explained in words. That unfathomable force is either in you or it is not. That motor will be the impulse for everything that flows naturally and Black Metal has inspired me to express all that sea of thoughts and visions for this world. Cogito ergo sum! I reflect myself on these virtues, since I discovered this Art in my life, I made it the primary core of my actions. Many people think that the behavior of an individual is based on what you hear or read, many times it is not like that, we will not always be the product of something that was circumstantially transmuted.

Your last full-Length, “Into The Goat Vulva,” was a maniacal onslaught of pure Black Witching Metal. What can you tell us about the recording conditions of said album and how long it took to record and compose those songs? Are you happy with the result?

S.S.- Thank you for your words! The songs were already composed in advance, we just waited for the right moment to materialize them. The recording process with this album was enigmatic, certain situations were dreamlike, few would understand. A vital force and an exalted energy helped us, to make everything happen regardless of the mortal barriers. We got a Chilean drummer to record the album, regarding that, I must say it was a wise choice for B.H. The guitarist traveled weeks before to be able to rehearse with Dead on drums, I traveled later to finish vocals recording. Everything was very fast, in a few days the album was ready, although my vocal conditions were not optimal because I had a bloody cold that left me hoarse, anyway, I managed to do the album in a record time. We will be eternally grateful to Pablo Clares for his dedication and professionalism. He is the owner of DM6 Recording Studio who did an excellent job on the sound of this record.

Bestial Holocaust's music radiates pure malevolence in every way possible. What were the most important ideals in how you presented your music? Furthermore, how important is the attitude of a band?

S.S.- This question would be more appropriate for the guitarist since he was the founder, leader and composer of all music, I took care of the lyrical theme. However, there is a determining truth in a band, when there is something to be said through this black art, it must be exposed and disseminated accordingly. So it happened with B.H. The attitude in a band is important in all its forms, fire and oxygen are two essential elements. Music and attitude cannot be a dualism, otherwise the result is pure empty nonsense garbage.

Many people categorize Bestial Holocaust as Black/Thrash. Are they correct? From your own perspective, how do you classify the music?

S.S.- The first demo "Odio y Muerte" was a primitive old school Death Metal, with subsequent releases the style shifted towards a more direct personality. The first album was in a more Black metal vein with passages already characteristic of the band. With the second album, our music evolved towards a more sicker direction (both musically and lyrically.) The criticisms from the media involved, they cataloged us as a Thrash / Black band. The style of the band was already somewhat solid with the third album, but unlike the previous one, the energy of this album was totally dark and foreboding in all its bark, the most appropriate style is how everyone feels it, we played dirty and classic Black/Thrash.

Do you ever see yourself play any other types of music, such as Death Metal and Heavy Metal?

S.S.- Yes, I am a crazy 90s Death Metal Maniac and I would like to participate in a project play drums. Regarding heavy metal, I enjoy few and select bands, that's all.

What inspired you to become an extreme metal vocalist and what are some of the pros and cons of being a singer? You also play the guitar and drums if I'm not mistaken?

S.S.-It all started in a project of some acquaintances, at that time I was more interested in playing drums, but since I had no experience, I limited myself to observing rehearsals. I remember that day, they were playing a Burzum cover "War", and the bassist was in charge to sing. Finally, when his break time came, I grabbed the microphone and told them to play something, I immediately started singing. I was screaming like a witch in her ritual in a crazy way, one of the boys said: hey! That sounds demonic! From now on you will be the new vocalist, and that's where it all started. My inspiration was very natural, my voice was "sick" and there was no other style that suited my timbre other than Black Metal. The rehearsals became more frequent, there were plans to record, compose... You know, all that initial adrenaline of the moment. We managed to play several concerts, we shared the stage with Terrorist, a band from Argentina, I had to play bass at the last minute, I learned a song in a few hours without knowing how to play strings. Later other concerts came and it was in some of them that the B.H.'s guitarist heard me sing. For reasons that it is no longer important to mention the project did not work, they all followed different paths. Anyway, I had learned a lot by myself, my voice had matured, I didn't have any vocalist as inspiration. When I was already part of Bestial Holocaust, I understood that being a vocalist was not at all something that could be taken lightly, it required care and other ways to grow the way of vocalizing without losing the particularity. I am very grateful for everything I learned without a doubt. Currently I play the guitar in a very, very precarious way to compose, I am able to reach the note that is in my mind to be able to put together a song. Regarding the battery where my skills are more acute. I have always been very passionate about that instrument. In fact, I worked years to buy one, but I was rarely able to use it, now I do it more frequently.

What is your stance on Satanism? Do you perceive it as an actual religion, or is it something else entirely far removed from the former?

S.S.- What humanity has always achieved since its inception has been to catalog and name a thought, and then impose it as something imperative according to its benefit. Satanism should not be taken under any religious dogma. For me, it is an unique state of being and a very individual way of existence that goes beyond mortal perception and is against human training. For years I stand firm against all this wave of lies and mental ties. Learn to think for yourself without falling into manipulation, that your fight is frontal.

What are some essential authors/books that had a profound impact on you in how you perceive existence? What kind of books are you interested in?

S.S.- I have read different authors among them: Arthur Schopenhauer, (Freedom), Charles Baudelaire (The Flowers of Evil), Voltaire (Treatise on Tolerance), Carl Gustav Jung (Psychology and Alchemy), Aleister Crowley (The Book of the Law and Others), Friedrich Nietzsche (The Antichrist and several more), Lovecraft, Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler and etc.... However, none of these books has influenced me to discern my existence. Knowledge must be interpreted to draw one's own conclusions. When this putrid world welcomes our flesh, life is like a "virgin" book and we write our history with blood through the experiences we live. Some time ago, I delved more deeply into books on spiritualism and other deep readings.

I've met quite a few people who were cynical about the legitimacy of females as far as their devotion to metal. How do you respond to such feeble thinking, and also, are there any other woman in extreme metal that you admire?

S.S.- This has always been quite a contentious issue, ignorant machismo still persists in many empty heads. Metal has no gender. It is clear that there are more men in this underworld, and women have always been judged for being a woman. Prejudices and moralities are intriguing topics within this circle. Personally, I observe the behavior of both sexes, there are few women who have earned respect with their actions, and others who deserve to be sodomized from all orifices. Today extreme Metal is undergoing a regression due to indoctrination and the useless image of appearance. Many girls take advantage of this to show off their butts with pride, identifying that prostitution as a false and degrading rebellion, just as male musicians confuse the attitude of this art with clown behavior. Unfortunately, even the modern age of internet has expanded this shit that is increasingly governed by this deformation. Those who respect this Philosophy of life should not drool behind these whores or applaud those clowns. The guillotine is ready to roll the heads of those puppets, regardless of whether it is a man or a woman. I know very few women who have my admiration, among them: Laura Macias (Hella / Bassist of Thornspawn and founder of Maledictvs. Of course, I also like bands where women are integrated like: Adorior, Derketa, Mythic, Demonic Christ, Valhalla, Tunjum, in infernal war and others that do not come to my mind.

What can you tell us about your respective work with Only Death Is Real 'zine? When did you first start editing the 'zine and what have you learned from the whole experience?

S.S.- I started on this dystopian path with Only Death is Real Zine 15 years ago, with the firm objective of supporting all maniacs directly involved with Underground's feeling, under my personal selection. In those times the ink and paper was the law. In my first and second issues, I sent and received fully handwritten interviews, it was a double job at the time of transcribing it, but the pleasure of doing it was priceless. I received many letters, many promotionals from bands in Europe, United States and South America. I made real friends with maniacs devoted to black metal, metalheads who to this day continue their activities without fainting. I edited 2 issues with editions limited to 200 copies that were duly spread, the support for my work was enormous from the bangers. The learning was about everything from improving spelling and grammar to diagramming minute details with greater precision. I had a couple of bad experiences with ripping off idiots. Surely those bastards have stopped listening to metal. I had the idea to edit the third number in those years but I couldn't do it. Time passed and I am working again to achieve my goal and bring my zine to life. I have a lot of interview material to do it. If there is devotion and passion for what you do, time will not be a problem.

It seems like a lot of people nowadays underestimate the importance of 'zines, and you can see that in their attitudes and how they conduct themselves (Particularly younger bands.) How crucial is the role of 'zines, and what do you make of these shitty attitudes? Do they deserve our support or not?

S.S.- It is easy to draw a conclusion from the outside, especially from young people who have not experienced an iota of all that underground movement. The fanzine belongs to a time, where all this music was rooted with loyalty to Underground's word, passionate whose purpose was to spread the black art of many bands, and thanks to that support they managed to cross borders. It felt a rebellious attitude and freedom of thought. In those years, Metal was not overshadowed by the hypocrites in which it is oppressed today, many mouths are infused with the word "old school", but the actions of these corpses are the opposite of their sermons. Old school means not opening your butt to modern sodomy, keeping traditions intact and carrying them forward with pride and conviction, as some persevering away from the obsession with making money still do. You have to have good judgment when listening to new bands, the support should in no way be condescending and blind. Whoever does not respect the value of a good zine or worse, denies its existence can go to hell. We do not need "rookie" from an age determined by progress and lobotomized by the use of technology as drug. On the other hand, today the "critics" who philosophize about Metal are journalists who write for big magazines, places where objectivity and sincerity are blackened by censorship and violated by conformity, in addition the jungle called "web" is full of sites that have the same problem mentioned above. Fortunately, time is the supreme judge who has always managed to disappear them.

What is your opinion on the mentality of people who throw hissy fits when they get bad reviews for their music? Are such actions justifiable or should people be more open to criticism?

S.S.- We have to be aware that we are living in an era of absurd competitions, many bands seek recognition in well-known media and are intolerant of honest and critical reviews, there is no maturity at all. If a review is constructive, of course it has to be received as such, even if it is not entirely to your liking, if they are only unfounded writings full of ignorance there is no reason to pay attention to it. In addition, we agree that personal tastes are not the same for everyone, a band cannot be liked by everyone, de gustibus non disputandum est. I know people who do not appreciate the first Sarcofago records, that is sacrilege for me, but it is their choice, while they don't throw shit on it, for me that's fine. Today few people who are really wrapped up in the mystical essence of this magic, and the catastrophe is that most of those who write sentences calling them criticism, have turned Metal into journalism, you can understand it too. An album is not "judged" only by the music, but also by the energy that it is capable of emanating, and the critical spirit that one must have to avoid prejudice or morals. For example, most reviewers / judges will never have the personality and objectivity to be able to write a thought about a NS band, because they are subject to indoctrination from society and spit shit anyway. In addition to the rampant inability to write, envy is also added, many snakes vomit venom just to denigrate a band.

Fear of the PC brigade has turned everyone into apologetic little bitches. There's literally no danger in extreme metal any more. How do you perceive this whole phenomenon?

S.S. - Exactly. I think avoiding problems and controversies has become a requirement for pacifist metalheads. That attitude of representation no longer exists. The fear of expressing ideas becomes a disease. Where is the extreme? That this does not remain in words. People ingratiate themselves with everyone for being accepted in a "circle". It is clear that those who do not defend their ideas, or, they are useless or their ideas are empty, and we cannot be intimidated by idiots whose hands are glued by cum to a keyboard. The thought must be linked to the verb Militancy, we must be the boot that crushes these larvae. We must not hide behind the misanthropic idea that is often masked by fear of acting. This extreme music was born to tear down any docile and condescending dogma or thought. We are wolves never sheep! A few weeks ago I posted a resounding rejection of junk people who use metal to wipe their ass with their modern ideas, I was aware that I would get a lot of shit against me from those worms. There are thousands of cowardly parasites hidden without honor. NO FEAR!! ZERO TOLERANCE!! If my truth offends like a razor, I am satisfied with it. May they hate me as long as they fear me.

Have you discovered any killer bands from the last few years that you enjoy and also recommend? What about the scene in Bolivia? Any newer bands from there worth checking out?

S.S.- Lately I am listening to new albums by bands that I know like: Inquisition, Azarath, Incantation, Impiety, Impurity, Horncrowned… ect… On new or relatively new bands to recommend would be: Wolflust (Brazil), Malakhim (Sweden), N.N.M. (Italy) Evil (Japan), Hexorcist (United States), Sacrocurse (Mexico), Genuflexion (Argentina), Morbosatan (Peru) and oct...

The scene in my country in recent years has strengthened, there are new and interesting bands, fanzines that are being published consecutively, organizations of independent material fairs and concerts of great interest. Unfortunately, as everywhere, these types of activities are temporarily frozen by the pandemic. Anyway, it is a pleasure to see that warrior spirit resurfacing in the devils soul. Some of the bands that I recommend are: Sepulchral Pest, Supay, Werewolf, Profanador among others.

What are 10 albums you can't live without?

S.S. - let see...

1.-Storn of the Light s Bane (Dissection)

2.-Cold Steel…for an Iron Age (Destroyer 666)

3.-Bathory (Bathory)

5.-Penetralia (Hypocrisy)

6.-Nifelheim (Nifelheim)

7.-Killers (Iron Maiden)

8.-The Nocturnal Silence (Necrophobic)

9.-Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult (Inquisition)

10.-INRI (Sarcofago)

Tell us a bit about your art: how long have you been drawing and how would you describe your style? Have you done any art for bands? What are some of your favorite artists?

S.S.- Since I can remember, I have always been fascinated by painting and its colors, drawings and its forms, over time my inclination became more evident with surrealist art, I also like bizarre art. Personally I see this part of the human artistic space as something magical, cosmic and hidden, I could not describe it otherwise. I started drawing a few months ago, it was something unexpected to discover that I had that talent dormant for so many years. I do not have a particular style due to my little experience, I am a self-taught draftsman, but hyperrealism catches my attention, later I will probably try to merge it with the surrealist style. Well, I did a couple of logos for two bands, I have a few more requests pending. My favorite artists are: Jean Delville, Francisco de Goya, Leonora Carrington, William Blake, Zdzisław Beksiński, Salvador Dali, Vergvoktre and etc ... in extreme metal artists that I admire are: Mark Riddick, Chris Moyen, Alan Pérez (Peru), Gilbert Miranda (Costa Rica), Daniel Corcuera (Chile), Daniele Valeriani (Italy), Paolo Girardi.

Lastly, how do you foresee the future in relation to your activities? The last morbid words are yours.

S.S.- I have several plans in my mind with my zine and my personal project. As soon as I have something physical you will be the first to know. I appreciate the support of all those crazy maniacs who still hold Bestial Holocaust in their minds. In this universe of extreme metal only the true devils will resist against any modern storm, the weak will die like flies in their failed attempt to belong. NO REGRETS! NO REMORSE! NO FUCKING COMPROMISE!!

Thanks for your support! it was an interesting interview, I enjoyed it!

INTERVIEW: HORDES OF THE BLACK CROSS (2017)

Aussie maniacs Hordes of the Black Cross specialize in lethal Black/Thrash that goes straight for the throat. The following interview was conducted with Halla (vocalist) and Korpse Horde (bassist) in June, 2017.

Greetings! Firstly, thanks for agreeing to do this interview. How's it going? I suppose the heat is killing you guys over there at the moment?

Halla: Yes indeed! Thanks indeed for having us on board with Death By Hammer.

I have since relocated from Melbourne, Victoria to another state call New South Wales. Where my area is; it’s known as far North Coast, Northern NSW or Northern Rivers. So it’s warmer and humid here but more of a subtropical climate. I live deep in the national forest on an off grid house. It makes you realise that in the deep scheme of things, your life is minute as compared to the chaos of the jungle system. In addition, I have seen a lot of snakes slithering in my area.

Melbourne does get the heat - dry scorching heat. I can’t stand the heat but if you’re playing hell’s music, then you have to be in the fire! I’m not a huge  fan of Melbourne’s winter either as it’s an urban, concrete winter. We don’t get frostbitten landscape and snow unless you’re up in the alpine region. All we get are overcast days, rain, wind and dankness. It’s quite boring and dull in winter but cold and grim nonetheless. My other bandmates are still currently living in Melbourne. However I have murderous desires to live in Tasmania. It’s really far down south with wild landscapes and equally wild weather. Only the strong survive.

Could you give us some basic info about the current line-up, history, and what you've released so far?

H: The black flame was initially lit with just myself, Korpse Horde and Thormentor and we started practicing and jamming since September/October late 2010 - drums, bass and vocals. It was challenging to find the right guitarist but fortunately we have Hate Blaze to partake in it a few months into it. Everything fell into place quickly with songwriting and band practices but it was only sometime in April 2011 that we’ve committed ourselves to exhume our black arts. And the rest is history.

Our releases so far had been

Self Titled Tape - 2011

Split 7” with Terra Australis - 2012

‘Dawn of War, Nights of Chaos’ 12” and CD album - 2016

Split 10” with Funeral Moon - 2017

Thus after 7 years and 46 shows of live flesh corruption, we are taking a hiatus from live performances to pursue a sabbatical and other personal commitments.

Can you give us some details about each member's input as far as the writing process goes?

H:

Thormentor - drums

Korpse Horde - bass

Hate Blaze - guitar

Halla - vocals

Everyone except for me is involve in the songwriting process.

What led to the choosing of the moniker and what does it represent?

H: Moniker as in the band name? It was rather difficult to find a band name that will suit us in all forms. I remember it being a process and so many names were thought of but when ‘Hordes of the Black Cross’ came along, we knew that was the one. I also believe the pressure of having an impending first live ritual made us deciding on that one! My personal take on it is this - it conjures and inspires an image of a huge horde riding wild across the bleak tundra with massive broadswords. I know this might not be a very unique or original imagery but that idea is always stuck in my head. I myself am a huge fan of deserts, remote areas, void spaces and hostile environment. In Australia, we have plenty of that. I have travelled in some of them but I desire more.

Your debut album, "Dawn of War, Nights of Chaos," is a great slab of thrash-infused black metal. I'm surprised over the fact that it was self-released, since I believe that material of such depth could easily gain the support from a credible label. Care to shine some light?

H: Thanks for acknowledging that. I think that where we are at the moment, we are capable of taking the band to a higher level. We would like to have our materials distributed internationally and ourselves playing in South America, Japan, North America, Asia, Europe and Scandinavia in the next few years. We even have desires to actually live it rough in Europe for a few months and just tour. However it can be a very arduous process of networking as we rose up as relatively unknown in the black metal community in late 2010. And we still are. We are not the most proficient in regards to promoting ourselves except just through word of mouth, live shows and with a zine like yours to be heard. I myself spend very little time online. I do know it’s a huge task to be out on a certain level.  And it’s challenging of course amongst a sea of bands out there to really stick your neck out. However from all of our past live assaults, we have been raising hell with some of the best Australian black and death metal bands and supports for international bands. Of course at this peak, we have decided to be on a hiatus. However that is fine as outside the band, we all have our personal lives to lead and pursue other commitments. The band itself has been a huge part of our lives as we have played in amazing venues alongside killer bands alongside our rabid comrades and maniacs that headbang to our set. When the time and space is right to work in alliance with a label, that opportunity will reveal itself.

How integral is the whole "DIY" ethic? Surely, it must have cost a fortune to release it on both CD and LP yourselves? How many copies of each format did you make?

H: Like what I’ve mentioned above, we are relatively unknown when we first formed as a band. And being in that state has made us very fiercely independent. Somehow it just falls into place as we want to work according to the pace that suits us well. The tape was from memory 100 copies, the split with Terra Australis was 300 for the 12” album and 500 for the CD and lastly 300 for the split 10.”

In regards to the DIY ethic it just fell into place with no intention of claiming we are one. We just worked with what we got. That somehow got sown into the way we operate. We have our own chamber for band practices and all of the releases have been recorded by us.

We have our connections and black hearts with playing alongside hardcore punk bands in your non traditional metal venues such as squat and abandoned warehouse spaces. Some of our best and deadly shows have been at hardcore punk shows. The audience have been known to crashed into us alongside busted pedals, crashing cymbals, mic stands and utter chaos. It was gutter!

A memorable live set was us playing in an abandoned warehouse with other hardcore punk bands. The police got news of the “illegal” assembly. From memory, halfway through our set, there was already a gathering of the police outside. Someone threw a glass bottle in the warehouse and they stormed in. Everything got shutdown. For the longest time ever as we slowly get our gear out with a sense of confusion, impending chaos and tension brewing, civil disobedience was the order of the night. Trouble erupted on the streets with the police clashing with the crowd.

How long were you working on the material? It's been well over a year since its release - how has the reception been?

K: We spent a long time on the album, Some songs on the album were quite old, around since the demo tape was recorded in 2011 and some were written during the end of the recording process and had never been unveiled live before. We have always recorded everything ourselves which is great that you can spend as much time as needed and without requiring any external influence, but this can be a double edged sword, as it’s easy to obsess over mixes and simply waste time, but we are very happy with the end result and it has been well received on Australian soil.

What kind of themes do you explore in your lyrics? Also, who did the artwork and what does it depict? It has a really cool medieval feel to it and suites the aura of your music.

H: In the broadest of sense - the chaos of the worlds above, below and the spirit that traverse in between. Through the turmoil and war of our nightskies and infinite worlds beyond, it serves as a conduit in relation to our mortality. Death, dreams, nightmares and the everlasting search for knowledge…...

Bartłomiej Kurzok from Poland has been our artist since the first 7” and shirt design. We initially had a draft concept of what we would like for the album cover - war, death, chaos, feasting and fire. We also gave him our lyrics to take in as further ideas. Bartłomiej took that in and from there, he worked his black magic.

Tell us about your live performance and what one ought to expect when attending your shows? Is playing live an integral part of your act? Do you prefer the studio or stage?

H: Pure black metal chaos in every sense of the word. Live performances are crucial to exhumed all the hours spent on practicing and writing the music. It also gives us the chance to connect with the audience. At the end of the day, we are giving it back to our comrades, brethren and those who have given us the platform to exist. Without them, I feel our existence as a band is futile. In regards to studio or stage, it has to be a balance of both. The studio gives us the chance to truly focus and capture inwardly on our black arts whereas as a live unit, we released that dark energy out.

As I understand it, you've shared the stage with bands like Inquisition, Abominator, Denouncement Pyre, etc. - what can you tell us about the overall turnout/experience? Did you manage to win over some fans?

H: It is without a doubt one of the many highlights for us as a band to be playing alongside these bands. The turnout of course are huge as they have been around for awhile and very much established in Australia and overseas. We had the opportunity to play interstate shows which allowed those who have not witnessed us execute our chaos.

I have many good words to say about Inquisition - bold onstage and down-to-earth off stage. However, I must say being on the same bill for a metal festival ‘Evil Invaders’ with Sadistic Intent has to be a crucial moment in time for me. Such honest passion and true essence of what it takes to play extreme music. It was a deadly, hellish set! True possession in every sense of the word.

I suppose you are quite picky when it comes to the type of riffs and parts you use in your compositions? Do you rehearse much? If not, do you spend many hours per day practicing your instrument?

Korpse Horde: We do find it hard to all get together these days with daily life and all, But yes we tend to record as we write and rework riffs as needed if it doesn't feel right, sometimes we can do this to excess which can have a negative impact. These days we are trying to simply our song writing and structures.

What are some of your biggest influences? I think it should be obvious to anyone who listens to your music, that you are not influenced by disco or jazz.

K: That question could open up a can of worms..We often enjoy getting drunk having sing alongs and end up serenading each other to Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb, however I would say as a collective Dissection, Carpathian Forest, Aura Noir, Destroyer 666 and Kreator would have to cover most bases. Fuckin’ Metallica rules too eh..

What is your thoughts on the current state of Australia's underground scene and which bands do you support/recommend (local and abroad)?

K: Personally I think Australia has a quite unique and interesting music scene, but it does seem to fluctuate every few years in activity. Lately there doesn't seem to be many new bands popping up, rather a resurgence of golden oldies that had been lying dormant for some years. Something which is equally exciting since we have quite a few heroes of yesteryear such as Abominator, Vomitor and Destruktor. Nocturnal Graves and Denouncement Pyre are also infamous amongst the Aussie metal scene, but I get more excited these days of the lesser known underdogs. Of course Nocturnes Mist have been at it for years but I think this is a highly underrated band - pure black metal chaos leaks out of southern hell!!

H: The usual suspects are always there. If you have not heard of them, then you have no business in the game. Here are my personal favourite and brethren of Australian black and death metal bands - Terra Australis, Elysian Blaze, Ignis Gehenna, Sanguinary Misanthropia, Abraxxas, Diabolical Demon Director, Funeral Moon, Decrepit Soul, Christ Dismembered, Deathripper, Stormbane, Eskhaton, Contaminated, Mongrel’s Cross, Wolfe, Encircling Sea, Vaiya, Oligarch, Bastardizer, Golgothan Remains, Dead River Runs Dry. And two bands that have recently emerged are Reaper and Evoker. Keep your ears peeled for them!

10 albums you can't live without.

H: In no particular order:

Nightbringer - Apocalypse Sun

Impiety - Skullfucking Armageddon

State of Fear - Discography

Carpathian Forest - Black Shining Leather

Bathory - Blood Fire Death

Dawn - Slaughtersun (Crown of the Triachy)

Dissection - Storm of the Light’s Bane

Inepsy - Rock and Roll Babylon

Discharge - Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say. Nothing

Diamanda Galas - The Divine Punishment

K:

Kiss - Self Titled

Motorhead - No Sleep til Hammersmith

Bathory - Nordland

Carcass - Heartwork

Marduk - Panzer Division Marduk

Craft - Void

Impaled Nazarene- Suomi Finland Perkele

Vinterland - Welcome My last Chapter

Thin Lizzy - Renegade

ZZ Top - Eliminator

Lastly, what does the future hold for Hordes of the Black Cross? Thanks for your time!

H: The future has already happened. We are living in a world towards nothingness. Exist in chaos! Hails to you Jim and Death By Hammer. Keep the black flame alive!

Vermont / USA

Born For Burning Productions

Those with a penchant for some decidedly raw and blasphemous black/death/thrash, will do well to check out the latest demo from Vermont-based maniacs, Shitangel. Their music evokes an evil aura in the vein of bands like Sarcofago, Necrovore, Blasphemy, Parabellum, etc., supplemented with a cavernous production complimentary to the style.

The band's name and “artwork” gives the impression of something foul and unholy, and that's exactly what you will be subjected to after pressing play. All the instruments are well arranged. I love the effects used for the vocals; they are really cool and go hand in glove with the putrid atmosphere. The riffs are sick and just what the doctor ordered. The music possess a menacing tone replete with an adoration for the classic black/death/thrash abyss of yesteryear.

On the balance, “Demo XXX” offers 5 tracks of pure hellish metal of death made for maniacs pure, so If you're a dork for clean sounding metal, then don't fucking bother. Killer demo!!!(HT)

Interview: Obeisance (2020)

The following interview was conducted with Chivo from US Black/Thrash band Obeisance.

Hails Chivo. To start things off, can you give us an update on the latest incarnation of the band, including some background on how the group formed?

ETERNAL HAILS TO YOU JIM!!! Fuckin' being in a band can be a pain in the buttocks!! I got a great guitarist in Hexcraft-,we wanna get an old live drummer back. A new drummer had asked me to wait, then I saw he was drumming for a local band that's been rehearsing for TWO YEARS & he put Obeisance on hold... What would you do? So he's out. Our good friends Duende helped us out with our newest CD "Abominations of Penetrations" !!!!

Tell us a bit about your latest album, "Nuclear Penetrator," and the time it took to write, record, and release the material? Are you happy with the result?

Oh, man. Well I read in Soldier of Fortune magazine (Rip) about the US bomber the B1 Lancer the fastest nuclear bomber in the world today, originally designed as a Nuclear Penetrator and Bam! A light went off in my head and I decided that it would be a great title for a song, for an album! Since about 2016, I had a CD of riffs that I made at the studio we did 7"s and “666War!!!” & “Appetite for Desecration.” The studio owner was going to have a son and he was gonna retire forever and ever for all eternity. He's back now, anyway, so I went to a friend who plays drums and great guitar & asked him, hey these are the tunes can you do drums n guitars for this? Are you up to the task? He said yeah! I'll bang em out THIS WEEKEND!! Well, months and months later he shows me four songs...fuck...so at this point I had recorded more songs with other friends and I decided to combine both line-ups and release it as " Musica del Diablo" and I hooked up with another friend, Ibex, who quickly did guitars, bass, and drums (programmed yes, but NOT to be industrial or any SHIT like that, I don't like Fear Factory or Godflesh, fuck off to that!! So the album was ready by 2017, but the bro I had agreed to release the CD turns out was not the label guy, I had to talk to someone else and nah, I was turned off by it and finally it was released by Wit Duiwel records on CD and our usual accomplice Warhemic Productions on Cassette!! BOTH are limited!!!

What inspires your lyrics? I take it Shakespeare is out of the question.

He is actually a very big influence. Jk fuck Shakespeare. Almost everything inspires me lyric wise. I told a friend who has his own satanic Temple that I write about ALL evil, not just the judeochristian concept of Evil. So on "Nuclear Penetrator" there's songs about genocide, nuclear weapons, fucking a 22 year old chick (true story), cannibalism, sleeping in my own vomit (true story), a couple of evil zombie songs (Slayer, Morbid Angel, Incantation, Death, and more have had songs about zombies (so if whoever doesn't like that, fuck off wanker), a war of darkness, and the last victory of the Aztecs over the Spaniards in Mexico City when it was an island. Stuff like that. Oh, I've written stuff about the Aztecs and American Indian tribes since the 90's so I didn't just all of a sudden decide to do so.

How would you describe your music to those who haven't heard it before?

Fuckin' violent unholy, unwholesome fast Metal, meat 'n' potatoes, not for PC “social justice warrior" pussies. And I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize - FOR NOTHING! FUCK OFF IF YOU'RE OFFENDED WUSSES.

Is WIT DUIWEL RECORDS official? It's your own label, right? What inspired the name?

Yessir. a small, very small (that's what she said) label but we're trying damnit!! The name is inspired by a fb friend of mine who was gonna send me some crocodile biltong but never did, so I thought he lives in South Africa & people there consider him a White Devil and Bam! I asked him how do you say White Devil in  Afrikaans and a label was born. I had a label before, Sick records, I was gonna release Rotting Christ, Libation, Lord of Putrefaction, goood stuff like that back in the 1990's but RAN OUT OF MONEY. So I never released anything. Oh well, but stuff is cheaper to release now, so here's hoping for more releases!!! 6 6 6!!!!

What can you tell us about the scene in Denver? Are there any other bands from there worth mentioning?

The scene in Denver has some diehards like Drek, Philip, and more! But it seems to be infested by PC sjw Antifa pussies who throw a tissy fit & act like wussie mini tyrants and try to get stuff banned, like Obeisance. But we did end up playing when they thought they cancelled our fest show, but WE PLAYED! AND the crowd reaction was GREAT!! So hail to Drek n Philip and the Denver diehards worshippers of Bluecifer the demonic Denver bronco!! Nice city and most imposing Rocky mountains. We didn't eat Rocky mountain oysters though. Do you eat those in South Africa?? They're a delicacy in Denver for some reason

What are 10 metal albums which had a lasting impact on you?

Fuck! My Metal warbrother I always have a problem with these lists, as 10 is few but I will try!

Viking - Do or Die
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath
Sacrifice -Torment in fire
Venom - Welcome to Hell/singles
Voivod - First four
Slayer - Show no up to Reign In Blood
Possessed - 7ch, Beyond The Gates, The Eyes of Horror
Sarcofago - I.N.R.I., Rotting, Hate
Sepultura - Morbid Visions

Celtic Frost – Morbid Tales, Emperor's Return, To Mega Therion
Bathory- S/t, The Return, Under The Sign Of The Black Mark, Blood Fire Death
Sodom up to Tapping the Vein
Hellhammer!!

You've been a veteran of the US black/death/thrash scene for years, how have things changed over the years when you compare the current state of the scene to how it
was around 15-20 years ago?

The left ruins everything!! They've come to the scene and wanna change it. They think they're so important and wise, they're fuckin' stupid useful idiots as Stalin called 'em. A buncha fuckin' bandwagon jumpers messing with the scene. But it should survive, but more underground. I love the scene but not these wuss left wing hipster ridiculous Interlopers that just don't fuckin' belong. Like someone said about the bullfighting scene- it is moribund, but will never die. Says I. But what the fuck do I know?

What do you think of people in the extreme metal community that use their social media presence as a means to spout their myopic political views? Should metal be apolitical?

They're ridiculous and stupid and ONLY radicalize people to the opposite of what they want to indoctrinate you to. Metal should be almost whatever you want. But when it starts getting left wing, preachy and that you HAVE TO ACCEPT all these ludicrous stupid degenerate things? Fuck off! I DON'T HAVE TO ACCEPT ANY-FUCKING-THING!! I don't Have to accept what you believe in or support what you believe in. So I can be called whatever, felicidades. I take opinions from who they come from, and if it's some left wing idiot that has no clue doesn't like me or Obeisance, GOOD.

Going back in time, how did Daniel Corchado end up playing on 2002's Lucifer Master? Were you friends? Also, what do you think of The Chasm/Cenotaph?

I don't like to brag but yeah he's my Brother. We've been bros since the 1990 when Cenotaph came to play in Juarez Mexico. I called him when I started Obeisance and spoke with him when he left Cenotaph and started The Chasm. I love both bands but Cenotaph's early unmelodic stuff and The Chasm's stuff with vocals. I don't listen to The Chasm much any more because I don't wanna unconsciously rip off some riffs, like this other dude's band whose made a CAREER out of stealing The Chasm's riffs and arrangements. Daniel & Antonio of the Chasm have helped me by being Obeisance since 1994 up to Lucifer Master which Daniel recorded, produced, played rhythm & lead guitar (along with Julio Viterbo of Shub-Niggurath) on. Obeisance was just me in 1994, Daniel helped me with demo 94 then Antonio joined and we recorded "Hellbent on Slaughter" also in 94. Then “Inferno Eterno” in 1996 and “Lucifer Master” in 2002.

What albums have you been blasting lately? Are there any highlights for you in recent years or do you prefer sticking to the classic(k)s?

Wargasm- Why play around?
Hegemony - debut full length
Diabolic - new one Rips!
Van Halen - misc. Not Van Hagar
Obeisance - 666WAR!!!
Necrophagia LA - The figure 4
Necroseizure - new
But yeah, I stick to the classicks

Can you share with us any crazy stories or anecdotes about past gigs?

Fuck, ok. An old drummer had a couple, we were in San Antonio Texas at the great Sacrifice of the Nazarene Child fest and he was happy! Our set went down well, he fucked this chick with big tits and a big ass and he got drunk. Well, it was held at Sam's burger joint that has big, tasty burger. My old guitarist got a burger, but he wasn't that hungry so our drummer came up and scarfed it down!! The next day we're coming back to El Paso, he felt like vomiting and he puked up a SOFTBALL SIZE vomit, probably the whole burger!! In Queretaro Mexico (on tour with Thornspawn, Morbosidad & Manticore) a kid thought I was the legendary Antimo Buonanno who played that night with Hacavitz. We went to get burgers at 3am & We were refused service at a hotel coz well we're horrible black death metallers and when we finally were lying in bed, we couldn't fall asleep coz we were joking and carrying on with Lou from Manticore and Dobber of Insect Warfare, Braced for Nails & Infernal Dominion who was drumming for Manticore on that tour in Brooklyn NY (on tour with Masacre!). I had to run to the stage, borrow a strap and cable for the borrowed bass I had and the lights went off! and I didn't have a pick for the bass!!! So I assumed I had one in my pocket, NO! It was a coin, but we had to start playing!!! So I played with the coin and it was a great set!! In Mexico City (on tour with Terrorist) when we were taken to our hotel, the promoter warned us if we saw a chick that was really pretty, it was probably a she-male. So after the show we went back to the hotel and a member wanted drugs!! So another friend called somebody and told our member- wait in the street in front of the hotel (in one of the most dangerous cities in the WORLD) the drugs were delivered & as he was going back in to the hotel he saw a pretty blonde and decided to pick HER up. So he went up and said, "Hi! What's your name?" And "she" said " Michelle" in a deep super masculine voice and our member said "ah, ok!" and RAN BACK to the hotel!!

What's the last album you bought?

Necrophagia - The shape of four
Raped God 666 - The Executioner
Hegemony - Enthroned by persecution
Necroseizure - Death of ballturret Gunner

Lastly, what does the future hold in store for Obeisance and Wit Duiwel Records? Long Live The Chivo!!!

Album review: Obeisance - Nuclear Penetrator (2019)

Obeisance - Nuclear Penetrator (2019)

USA

Wit Duiwel Records

Obeisance has been around in the underground for well over a decade, churning out some killer releases over the years, with albums like "Lucifer Master" and "Unholy, Unwholesome & Evil" being prime slabs of black/thrash. Their 2019 album, "Nuclear Penetrator", sees the band take on a slightly different sound, but not straying too far Here the band embrace more of a brutal war metal sound. It's an improvement to 2018's "Musica Del Diablo", which suffered from a bad production due to a problem with the audio at the pressing plant. The music presented on this release is fast and relentless for the most part, but also incorporate a few mid-paced numbers like the hilariously titled 'Have Some Meats'. Generally, I'm not too fond of programmed drums, but it seems to work here, giving some of the songs a kind of “grind” feel. They switch up the pace just enough to prevent the songs from sounding the same. The riffs are well executed and show solid craftsmanship, while the vocalist emits his usual blackish rasp sounding like a more deranged, evil version of Cronos. The riffs are killer, and so are the solos, which come at you like they're hitting a speedball. It's a fun album to listen to, even though it would probably have sounded better real drums, and while "Nuclear Penetrator" may not be the best example of Obeisance's work, it still stands as a killer entry in the realm of all things unholy, unwholesome & evil. Album review: Communion - At The Announcement (2018)

Communion - At The Announcement - Full Length (2018)

Chile

Hells Headbangers

Those with a penchant for evil, raw, South American metal ― will no doubt rejoice upon hearing Communion's debut album, "At the Announcement." I remember getting my hands on their demo tape when it came out and being blown away by the sheer intensity and sinister atmosphere, particularly the track 'Black Metal Dagger'. The songs on "At the Announcement" gives me that same vibe, except it's like that with every track. Musically, Communion shares a lot of idiomatic traits with countrymen like Force of Darkness, Hades Archer, Invincible Force, etc., but mainly take cues from older bands like Sodom, Destruction, Bathory, etc. The album opens with 'Impalement to Destroy' ― a three-minute onslaught of throat-slashing riffs and possessed vocals that rage like burning steel, while songs like 'Secret Rites' and 'At The Announcement' batters you into the floor with brutish intensity and thrash-like ferocity. The drums are excellent too, fast and hard-hitting. If I'm not mistaken, the band released two albums around the same time (the other one which is called The Communion), although the tracks on "At The Announcement" was recorded between 2014 - 2017, which makes it the first full-length. Definitely Check it out if you have a fondness for bands like Slaughtbbath, Funeral Winds, and Bestial Warlust. (HT)
