Demo review: Phthisis - Embodiment of Decay (2020)

PHTHISIS - Embodiment of Decay (Demo 2020)

USA

Brutal Cave Productions

Embodiment of Decay” is the debut demo from Colorado miscreants, PHTHISIS, and was released by BRUTAL CAVE PRODUCTIONS (Portugal) on CD. The demo features 4 tracks of cavernous Death/Doom, with a pinch of power electronics on the first and third track. The vocalist emits a powerful growl, backed by hellish rasps here and there. The guitars are well executed and do a good job at conjuring an ominous atmosphere. The bass is nicely laced in the mix and add an extra layer of heaviness. The drums are well implemented, with the drummer doing some pretty inventive fills and stuff. The production also isn't bad for a demo and does well at augmenting the performance. The atmosphere evokes horrifying images of being locked in a dark room with some hideous monstrosity. “Embodiment of Decay” is definitely a very solid entry and considering that it's the band's first demo. 4 tracks of pure sinister Death/Doom madness that clocks at 23 minutes. Recommended. (HT)

EP review: Larvae - Sickening Cadaveric Perversion (2020)

Larvae - Sickening Cadaveric Perversion (2020)

Italy/Romania

Independent

LARVAE is the putrid manifestation spawned from the darkest recesses of Lucilia's Sericata's morbid mind. The monstrosity that is LARVAE has its disgusting roots in Italy, but since Lucilia now resides in Romania, the band can be seen as an Italian/Romanian collaboration. The vocals are absolutely sick – even terrifying. I don't think I've heard many woman lay down such evil, eerie, and twisted vocals. (Sonya Sepulchral from BESTIAL HOLOCAUST is another great female vocalist that comes to mind.) There's even segments of maniacal laughter in the songs, which is quite inventive, if not disturbing. The music can be classified as Death/Doom, but of the heaviest, sickest kind. The atmosphere radiates pure fucking decay, as a variety of abysmal vocals are vomited over the mic, supported with riffs heavier than king kong's balls. The primitive drum beats by Disgusting Dennis are well done and fitting for this style. I like the implementation of horror movie samples, which definitely adds more texture to the music. You know you're in for something utterly morose when an EP is called “Sickening Cadaveric Perversion.” Fans of GOATLORD will go absolutely apeshit for LARVAE, as they embody the true and unholy essence of Death/Doom, but with an approach closer to early CARCASS in terms of themes. Overall, an excellent fucking EP that comes highly recommended. (HT)

Demo review: Shitangel - Demo XXX (2020)

Shitangel - Demo XXX

Vermont / USA

Born For Burning Productions

Those with a penchant for some decidedly raw and blasphemous black/death/thrash, will do well to check out the latest demo from Vermont-based maniacs, Shitangel. Their music evokes an evil aura in the vein of bands like Sarcofago, Necrovore, Blasphemy, Parabellum, etc., supplemented with a cavernous production complimentary to the style.

The band's name and “artwork” gives the impression of something foul and unholy, and that's exactly what you will be subjected to after pressing play. All the instruments are well arranged. I love the effects used for the vocals; they are really cool and go hand in glove with the putrid atmosphere. The riffs are sick and just what the doctor ordered. The music possess a menacing tone replete with an adoration for the classic black/death/thrash abyss of yesteryear.

On the balance, “Demo XXX” offers 5 tracks of pure hellish metal of death made for maniacs pure, so If you're a dork for clean sounding metal, then don't fucking bother. Killer demo!!!(HT)

INTERVIEW: ONHEILIG - 2020

The following interview was conducted with Doodsengel and Raven from South African Black Metal band ONHEILIG.

Hails. How was Onheilig conceived and what is the ideology behind it?

Doodsengel: Onheilig was conceived when Raven and I got back in touch after a few years and decided to do a black metal project in the vein of the old second wave and taking it from there. There were no intentions other than to make black metal as we know it and progress from that point. You always need a starting point with something and it was a logical point to start with, maybe come across as derivative and then hopefully settle into our own sound. The ideology from my side personally is based on decay of the world we know, death and the essence of spirituality through death.

Raven: Onheilig is here is to take back the essence of black metal to what it started out as, for me it's the glorification of death, nature and true Satanism.

Tell us a little bit about your demo, "His Will, My Craft," and the reactions you've received so far? Are you happy with the result?

Doodsengel: So far the reactions have been quite positive. As far as being happy with the result, I personally choose to ignore both positive and negative criticism to a degree (barring constructive criticism which could lead to areas of improvement). If you allow the criticism to taint or pervert your vision or your art then you're doing it for the wrong reasons and should rather focus your efforts on something else. Art is inherently selfish and pandering to what people want is the unfortunate attitude that spawned the abominable "Old School Death Metal" revival and subsequent other revivals where we've seen washed up burnouts trying to reclaim their "former glory" and I find it pathetic and insincere.

What can you tell us about the South African metal scene? Are there any worthy albums and bands you can recommend?

Doodsengel: The South African metal scene is an absolute joke and not even worth a detailed explanation, but I'll try give a decent enough overview. The bands all just seem to pander towards the mainstream trends of what's popular overseas, except they manage to do it worse. Not only is it insincere, but it seems like some god awful popularity contest with falsified "celebrity" status stupidity and indiscriminate comradery where it becomes about "supporting the scene" and not about the music at all. I prefer to stay away from these idiots and their bullshit mentality and mainstream pandering attitudes with no artistic vision, spirit or respect for music in general. The only band and album I could possibly recommend is the orthodox black metal band from Cape Town called Formless Devotion and their EP 'Sparks of Separation'. Nothing else really crosses my mind as I don't care about it at all.

Raven: No comment.

Are any of the members in Onheilig involved in any side projects? What about past bands and projects? Give us a little background.

Doodsengel: I'm sure Raven can answer about his project. I only have a minor involvement in it laying down bass tracks. I'm working on something on the side but I don't have anything concrete enough to actually justify calling it a side-project. We've both been in bands prior to this, and even one together which we both left. An absolute joke of a "black metal" band that just played out as bad Norsecore trash. I hadn't begun playing an instruments yet and was incessantly begged to do vocals. I also had a few shitty side-projects with one of the other members of that band that aren't worth mentioning. I still hadn't begun playing an instrument so only had limited input musically.

Raven: Ominous Reflections is my side project and was a live force for a few years in the scene. Now it is solely a studio project. Recording of the EP will start early December. Ominous Reflections is a different beast from Onheilig all together.

(Demo artwork for "His Will, My Craft")

What is your opinion on people who play music who jump from one genre to the next as a means to conform to trends?

Doodsengel: I have no problem with experimentation with other genres as I have a rather "broad" taste in music. But when it's a constant shift to pander to the current flavours of the month, then it's woefully insincere and those people just pollute and pervert music. I'm not fond of the attitude of "music is entertainment", "music should be fun". Music is entertainment to a degree, but it's also self-expression. Music can be taken seriously. If you are just in it for the fun, that's great. I couldn't care. It'll always show and I can gladly avoid it. There needs to be a degree of seriousness. I don't agree with the Frank Zappa school of thought where silliness reigns supreme. Granted I don't mind a bit of silliness every now and then. We all need our cheap thrills. And I've strayed slightly off topic, so to sum it up in less convoluted terms: Fuck those people and the world is a better place without them.

What inspired the name Onheilig and the idea to have lyrics in Afrikaans?

Doodsengel: I wouldn't say anything directly inspired the name 'Onheilig' other than we knew we wanted a name in Afrikaans and also wanted to avoid having a multi-worded name. I also apologise to Unholy from Finland. It means the same thing. The idea to have lyrics in Afrikaans was mostly a sonic choice. Apart from being apart of our heritage, it's also just a very simple, blunt and gutteral language. It sounds harsh and I personally think it fits the extremity of the sound.

Raven: Onheilig means Unholy, hence our music is the true definition of the word.

Your opinion on the following:

* Black Metal Against Fascism

Doodsengel: Ironically fascist. A bunch of rich kids with no grasp on reality who feed on mainstream rhetoric that they probably learned at college or some large educational institution that indoctrinate the youth into believing in bullshit causes that mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. Modern day "cancel culture" and other moronic movements driven to silence freedom of speech and expression and forces their narrative and "values" (or lack thereof) upon you. Sounds pretty goddamn fascist to me.

* H.P. Lovecraft

Doodsengel: One of the most brilliant writers in the 20th Century. Not only is he a master of atmosphere and horror, but also embedded philosophy. He seems to get unfairly criticised in this day and age because certain people deem him a bad writer because of his purportedly "shallow" characters, when they forget that the characters merely act as a vehicle to drive the narrative. They're insignificant in the overall scale and the only significance they could possibly have is to encapsulate the horror which is greater than the human element. People look at him on a surface level and whine about insipid little details like "shallow" characters without seeing what he was trying to do. Criticising his writing without seeing how forward thinking it was. Despite hating modern writers he used a lot of modern techniques at the time. He could also emulate other writers very well when he wanted to. Him mimicking Edgar Allan Poe shows this. Modern society tend to pass him off as a substandard pulp writer because wankers like Stephen King and the internet said so. Read him and make up your own fucking minds. Look beyond superficial things like the alleged "lack" of in depth and supposed multifaceted characters. He wrote short stories for fuck sake.

* Music theory

Doodsengel: A bit of a double edged sword. An extremely useful tool to have. Unfortunately people tend to swing one way or the other. And to me both arguments are wrong. Some people construct music purely from theory and forget that even masters like Johann Sebastian Bach bend the rules. They tend to make highly technical and constructed music that operates more like strict form mathematical equations rather than music. And the result is something not only very sterile, but also uniform. They forget about things like "creativity". The other side of the coin are idiotic rockers that'll tell you music theory kills your creativity and you shouldn't learn it. They're idiots and if you listen to them you'll probably never ascend passed being a vapid pub rock band. Unless you're wildly creative and invent your own harmonic language. Those individuals are few and far between. Use theory as a tool and creativity and freedom to form the sound you want. The only limitations are created by stupidity.

10 albums that made an impact on you?

Doodsengel: This is a rather difficult one to answer because there are so many, but I'll try. In no specific order.

* Dødheimsgard - Satanic Art

* King Crimson - Red

* Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

* Gorgoroth - Under the Sign of Hell

* At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours

* Thorns - Thorns

* Atrocity - Todessehensucht

* Dissection - The Somberlain

* Mekong Delta - The Music of Erich Zann

* Änglagård - Hybris

I'll also give extra mentions of composers I like too that I think have made an impact on me, even if it's not outwardly apparent:

* Johann Sebastian Bach

* Carlo Gesualdo

* Dmitri Shostakovich

* Béla Bartók

And various oud players from the Arabic classical form.

 Raven:

- Gorgoroth - Destroyer

- Dodheimsgard - Satanic Art

- Satyricon - The Shadow Throne

- Dissection (their entire work)

- Black Funeral - Waters of Weeping

Lastly, what are the future plans for ONHEILIG?

Doodsengel: We're currently in the process of writing material for a new release which will hopefully be done some time in 2021. It will be different from the derivative sound heard on the demo, and whether people will like it or not is an insignificant thought that only time will be able to tell us.

Raven: A full length album is to be finished within next year, the full length album will have no correlation to the demo. Something entirely new and soul devouring will be birthed.

Album review: Prison Hell - Мяco. Viande. Fleisch. Meat. (2020)

Prison Hell - Мяco. Viande. Fleisch. Meat. 2020

Canada

War Vellum

War Vellum has done it again. The quality is consistent with releases from black noise such as Tsalal and Mesmeric Revelation. So when I saw the Prison Hell tape up for pre-order, I immediately bought it. This project is from good ole Edmonton, home of black/death Gods like Blasphemy and Revenge, and you can definitely hear it in the music. It is the brainchild of Kib Sreng from Brulvahnatu, Black Abyss, and ex-member of higher profile acts such as Antediluvian and A.M.S.G. He doesn't stray too far from the path either. The debut full-length, “Мяco. Viande. Fleisch. Meat.” is pure bestial black/death at its best. The art presented is highly inspired and creative. He's not afraid to cross into other genres at the drop of a dime with certain parts of songs having an Incantation feel, whereas other songs have more of a Beherit worship style. The vocals are a mix of guttural and raspy black metal (in the Beherit vein) and suits the music. My favorite part is without a doubt the solos; they are weird, fringe, and sound cool as hell. The production on this release is mixed and mastered perfectly for what you're being subjected to. If you're craving something different, yet still somewhat familiar, then check this out. (LR)

EP review: Northern - Cabin Fever (2020)

Northern – Cabin Fever (2020)

USA

Sinistrari Records

Spawned from the ashes of Cold Northern Vengeance, Northern is a four-piece featuring mastermind Heathen (CNV, Martyrvore, Ancestral Shadows), including members from bands like Desolate and December Wolves. “Cabin Fever” is the band's second release, an 7” EP featuring two tracks of fierce and deadly black/death that radiates pure fucking evil. The raw production is very fitting to the music and the band does a good job at capturing an atmosphere redolent of their environment. The lyrics on this EP are quite interesting, with 'Hypothermia' being about how hikers from urban areas end up freezing to death in the New Hampshire mountains, whereas 'Cabin Fever' mentions burying Jehovah's Witnesses in the woods. These two songs are very well-arranged and cohesive, featuring some truly excellent riffs and an otherworldly atmosphere that does a good job at drawing the listener in. The vocalist emits a powerful and menacing growl that is perfect for this style. Worth mentioning is the fact that Northern doesn't really sound like Cold Northern Vengeance and embraces a more black/death style, whereas the former had a wider palette of influences. Overall, I don't really have anything to complain about, as this is a solid release through and through. This EP gets my highest recommendation. (HT)

EP review: The Incursion - Pandemonium (2020)

The Incursion – Pandemonium - EP (2020)

USA

Our Ancient Future

California's The Incursion release their debut EP, “Pandemonium,” featuring 7 tracks of tumultuous black/death metal that goes straight for the skull. The music is fairly fast, featuring speedy drums, bestial vocals, and an apocalyptic wall of dissonance that penetrate the senses with lethal force. This is pretty filthy stuff. The music is about as straight-forward as it gets, with chaos and hate as its focal doctrine. There are no guitar solos, which is something I like to hear in war metal. The music is played with passion and decidedly ferocious, with snippets of brilliance throughout; however, the band still needs to evolve their sound a bit, seeing as that they have the potential. For its 20 minute duration, this EP sure leaves a devastating blow. If you enjoy bands like Nexul, Antichrist Siege Machine, Human Agony, etc., then absolutely check these guys out.(HT)

Demo review: Garden of Eyes - Altar of Despair (2020)

Garden of Eyes – Altar of Despair – Demo (2020)

England

Cryptic Blood Records

Garden of Eyes is a one-man manifestation spawned from the depths of Nordwich, England, with sole member Nattskog handling all instruments on its latest demo, “Altar of Despair.” Personally, I always like to check out new death metal bands from the UK, even though the amount of quality death metal from over there may not always be in abundance, but the few that manage to pop up on my radar never fail to impress me. Garden of Eyes utilizes the Swedish axe tone, but what makes them a bit different is their varied use of tempos, and the fact that the music is mostly slow, evil and excruciatingly heavy, paired with a cavernous vocal assault that sounds like it was spewed from the mouth of some hideous ghoul. The band refers to their music as “Rotten Eldritch Death Metal” and the description couldn't be more spot on. Programmed drums can be a hit or miss, but are well done in this case, adding a heavy dynamic to the music. The atmosphere on this release is absolutely morose and makes me think of being lost in some underground catacomb filled with all things decayed. The three songs on “Altar of Despair” offers a tasty 12 minutes of pure charnel, unholy death metal that is bound to raise a few dead souls every time you press play. (HT)

Album review: Black Crown - Caverns of Thantifaxath (2020)

Black Crown - Caverns of Thantifaxath (2020)

USA

Sathanath Records

Black Crown is the sinister manifestation conjured by The Mountain VVitch (ex-Necrophagia, Haxxan) and "Caverns of Thantifaxath" is their debut album, joint-released between Satanath Records, More Hate Productions, and The End Of Time Records. The duo offers a lethal slab of cold, belligerent black metal that aims to corrupt the mind with a corrosive atmosphere and vocals replete with spite. The themes all pertain to the occult, as Thantifaxath literally means “Great Ghoul” and is known to be one of the pathways and tunnels of Set. The band does a good job at transmitting those abysmal energies; however, I feel that a rawer sound would have benefited the music more, as I find the album's production a little too clean and polished for my liking. Nevertheless, there's still some enjoyable moments to be found here, with an atmosphere and sound that brings to mind bands like Thorns, Temple of The Maggot, Carpathian Forest, etc. The pace of the album varies from mid to fast, with some exceedingly heavy riffs scattered throughout. I'm not a big fan of the high-pitched vocals, although I can tolerate them. Overall, "Caverns of Thantifaxath" is a passable entry featuring 9 paeans of blasphemous metal to satiate the morbid mind. (HT)

Demo review: Chronicles - Astōdān (2020)

Chronicles - Astōdān (2020)

Bangladesh

Independent

Chronicles (or “ChronicleS” as the band prefers to spell it) is a young death metal band from Dhaka, Bangladesh, and “Astōdān” is their latest demo. When I think of the Bangladeshi scene, bands like Orator, Morbidity, and Nafarmaan comes to mind. That being said, it's always interesting to hear new and upcoming bands from the South Asian scene. The demo has a fairly underproduced sound, which gives the music a sinister, subterranean-like feel, paired with their predilection for occult themes pertaining to Angra-Mainyu. These five songs are fairly well played, and while I wouldn't really say it's anything special, the music on this demo is quite good and straight-forward, with a sound that gives nods to bands like Mortem, Autopsy, Necrovore, etc. The demo offers five tracks of raw, abyssic death metal, including a dandy cover of Hellhammer's Messiah, showing their appreciation for the classics. Overall, it's a decent entry from a young Bangladeshi horde showing a knack for blasphemous black/death metal. The underground is alive in Bangladesh and bands like Chronicles is proof of that. (HT)

Album review: Carnosus - Dogma of The Deceased (2020)

Carnosus - Dogma of The Deceased (2020)

Sweden

Satanath Records

Hailing from Örebro, Sweden, Carnosus presents their debut album, “Dogma of the Deceased,” released by Russia's Satanath records. Melodic death metal does not draw me in easily, but Carnosus is an exception: their high-quality music is a seamless balance of melody, technique, and heaviness. Each song is packed to the brim with excellent riffs, incorporating some neoclassical influence. This genre benefits from proper production to stand out, and that's exactly what the band has opted for by teaming up with Fredrik Nordström (At The Gates, Dark Tranquility, Lord Belial, etc.) and Robert Kukla to record “Dogma of the Deceased.” Musically, they share some idiomatic traits with bands like Sacramentum, At The Gates, The Crown, etc., mixed with their own unique sound that also borrows from progressive metal and thrash. The overall result is something to behold, with songs that bleed passion and superb songwriting and musicianship, favouring substance and atmosphere over superfluous technicality. “Dogma of the Deceased” boasts an excellent production, a full sound that really brings out the best in the band and its individual members. The music also doesn't border on sounding plastic, retaining a certain rawness and pugnacious edge that gives the music just the right amount of punch to make them stand out. Check them out if you enjoy good melodic death metal. For fans of Anata, Sarcasm, and Arsis. (HT)

Interview: Obeisance (2020)

The following interview was conducted with Chivo from US Black/Thrash band Obeisance.

Hails Chivo. To start things off, can you give us an update on the latest incarnation of the band, including some background on how the group formed?

ETERNAL HAILS TO YOU JIM!!! Fuckin' being in a band can be a pain in the buttocks!! I got a great guitarist in Hexcraft-,we wanna get an old live drummer back. A new drummer had asked me to wait, then I saw he was drumming for a local band that's been rehearsing for TWO YEARS & he put Obeisance on hold... What would you do? So he's out. Our good friends Duende helped us out with our newest CD "Abominations of Penetrations" !!!!

Tell us a bit about your latest album, "Nuclear Penetrator," and the time it took to write, record, and release the material? Are you happy with the result?

Oh, man. Well I read in Soldier of Fortune magazine (Rip) about the US bomber the B1 Lancer the fastest nuclear bomber in the world today, originally designed as a Nuclear Penetrator and Bam! A light went off in my head and I decided that it would be a great title for a song, for an album! Since about 2016, I had a CD of riffs that I made at the studio we did 7"s and “666War!!!” & “Appetite for Desecration.” The studio owner was going to have a son and he was gonna retire forever and ever for all eternity. He's back now, anyway, so I went to a friend who plays drums and great guitar & asked him, hey these are the tunes can you do drums n guitars for this? Are you up to the task? He said yeah! I'll bang em out THIS WEEKEND!! Well, months and months later he shows me four songs...fuck...so at this point I had recorded more songs with other friends and I decided to combine both line-ups and release it as " Musica del Diablo" and I hooked up with another friend, Ibex, who quickly did guitars, bass, and drums (programmed yes, but NOT to be industrial or any SHIT like that, I don't like Fear Factory or Godflesh, fuck off to that!! So the album was ready by 2017, but the bro I had agreed to release the CD turns out was not the label guy, I had to talk to someone else and nah, I was turned off by it and finally it was released by Wit Duiwel records on CD and our usual accomplice Warhemic Productions on Cassette!! BOTH are limited!!!

What inspires your lyrics? I take it Shakespeare is out of the question.

He is actually a very big influence. Jk fuck Shakespeare. Almost everything inspires me lyric wise. I told a friend who has his own satanic Temple that I write about ALL evil, not just the judeochristian concept of Evil. So on "Nuclear Penetrator" there's songs about genocide, nuclear weapons, fucking a 22 year old chick (true story), cannibalism, sleeping in my own vomit (true story), a couple of evil zombie songs (Slayer, Morbid Angel, Incantation, Death, and more have had songs about zombies (so if whoever doesn't like that, fuck off wanker), a war of darkness, and the last victory of the Aztecs over the Spaniards in Mexico City when it was an island. Stuff like that. Oh, I've written stuff about the Aztecs and American Indian tribes since the 90's so I didn't just all of a sudden decide to do so.

How would you describe your music to those who haven't heard it before?

Fuckin' violent unholy, unwholesome fast Metal, meat 'n' potatoes, not for PC “social justice warrior" pussies. And I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize - FOR NOTHING! FUCK OFF IF YOU'RE OFFENDED WUSSES.

Is WIT DUIWEL RECORDS official? It's your own label, right? What inspired the name?

Yessir. a small, very small (that's what she said) label but we're trying damnit!! The name is inspired by a fb friend of mine who was gonna send me some crocodile biltong but never did, so I thought he lives in South Africa & people there consider him a White Devil and Bam! I asked him how do you say White Devil in  Afrikaans and a label was born. I had a label before, Sick records, I was gonna release Rotting Christ, Libation, Lord of Putrefaction, goood stuff like that back in the 1990's but RAN OUT OF MONEY. So I never released anything. Oh well, but stuff is cheaper to release now, so here's hoping for more releases!!! 6 6 6!!!!

What can you tell us about the scene in Denver? Are there any other bands from there worth mentioning?

The scene in Denver has some diehards like Drek, Philip, and more! But it seems to be infested by PC sjw Antifa pussies who throw a tissy fit & act like wussie mini tyrants and try to get stuff banned, like Obeisance. But we did end up playing when they thought they cancelled our fest show, but WE PLAYED! AND the crowd reaction was GREAT!! So hail to Drek n Philip and the Denver diehards worshippers of Bluecifer the demonic Denver bronco!! Nice city and most imposing Rocky mountains. We didn't eat Rocky mountain oysters though. Do you eat those in South Africa?? They're a delicacy in Denver for some reason

What are 10 metal albums which had a lasting impact on you?

Fuck! My Metal warbrother I always have a problem with these lists, as 10 is few but I will try!

Viking - Do or Die
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath
Sacrifice -Torment in fire
Venom - Welcome to Hell/singles
Voivod - First four
Slayer - Show no up to Reign In Blood
Possessed - 7ch, Beyond The Gates, The Eyes of Horror
Sarcofago - I.N.R.I., Rotting, Hate
Sepultura - Morbid Visions
Darkthrone - Soulside Journey up to Transylvanian Hunger
Celtic Frost – Morbid Tales, Emperor's Return, To Mega Therion
Bathory- S/t, The Return, Under The Sign Of The Black Mark, Blood Fire Death
Sodom up to Tapping the Vein
Hellhammer!!

You've been a veteran of the US black/death/thrash scene for years, how have things changed over the years when you compare the current state of the scene to how it
was around 15-20 years ago?

The left ruins everything!! They've come to the scene and wanna change it. They think they're so important and wise, they're fuckin' stupid useful idiots as Stalin called 'em. A buncha fuckin' bandwagon jumpers messing with the scene. But it should survive, but more underground. I love the scene but not these wuss left wing hipster ridiculous Interlopers that just don't fuckin' belong. Like someone said about the bullfighting scene- it is moribund, but will never die. Says I. But what the fuck do I know?

What do you think of people in the extreme metal community that use their social media presence as a means to spout their myopic political views? Should metal be apolitical?

They're ridiculous and stupid and ONLY radicalize people to the opposite of what they want to indoctrinate you to. Metal should be almost whatever you want. But when it starts getting left wing, preachy and that you HAVE TO ACCEPT all these ludicrous stupid degenerate things? Fuck off! I DON'T HAVE TO ACCEPT ANY-FUCKING-THING!! I don't Have to accept what you believe in or support what you believe in. So I can be called whatever, felicidades. I take opinions from who they come from, and if it's some left wing idiot that has no clue doesn't like me or Obeisance, GOOD.

Going back in time, how did Daniel Corchado end up playing on 2002's Lucifer Master? Were you friends? Also, what do you think of The Chasm/Cenotaph?

I don't like to brag but yeah he's my Brother. We've been bros since the 1990 when Cenotaph came to play in Juarez Mexico. I called him when I started Obeisance and spoke with him when he left Cenotaph and started The Chasm. I love both bands but Cenotaph's early unmelodic stuff and The Chasm's stuff with vocals. I don't listen to The Chasm much any more because I don't wanna unconsciously rip off some riffs, like this other dude's band whose made a CAREER out of stealing The Chasm's riffs and arrangements. Daniel & Antonio of the Chasm have helped me by being Obeisance since 1994 up to Lucifer Master which Daniel recorded, produced, played rhythm & lead guitar (along with Julio Viterbo of Shub-Niggurath) on. Obeisance was just me in 1994, Daniel helped me with demo 94 then Antonio joined and we recorded "Hellbent on Slaughter" also in 94. Then “Inferno Eterno” in 1996 and “Lucifer Master” in 2002.

What albums have you been blasting lately? Are there any highlights for you in recent years or do you prefer sticking to the classic(k)s?

Wargasm- Why play around?
Hegemony - debut full length
Diabolic - new one Rips!
Van Halen - misc. Not Van Hagar
Obeisance - 666WAR!!!
Necrophagia LA - The figure 4
Necroseizure - new
But yeah, I stick to the classicks

Can you share with us any crazy stories or anecdotes about past gigs?

Fuck, ok. An old drummer had a couple, we were in San Antonio Texas at the great Sacrifice of the Nazarene Child fest and he was happy! Our set went down well, he fucked this chick with big tits and a big ass and he got drunk. Well, it was held at Sam's burger joint that has big, tasty burger. My old guitarist got a burger, but he wasn't that hungry so our drummer came up and scarfed it down!! The next day we're coming back to El Paso, he felt like vomiting and he puked up a SOFTBALL SIZE vomit, probably the whole burger!! In Queretaro Mexico (on tour with Thornspawn, Morbosidad & Manticore) a kid thought I was the legendary Antimo Buonanno who played that night with Hacavitz. We went to get burgers at 3am & We were refused service at a hotel coz well we're horrible black death metallers and when we finally were lying in bed, we couldn't fall asleep coz we were joking and carrying on with Lou from Manticore and Dobber of Insect Warfare, Braced for Nails & Infernal Dominion who was drumming for Manticore on that tour in Brooklyn NY (on tour with Masacre!). I had to run to the stage, borrow a strap and cable for the borrowed bass I had and the lights went off! and I didn't have a pick for the bass!!! So I assumed I had one in my pocket, NO! It was a coin, but we had to start playing!!! So I played with the coin and it was a great set!! In Mexico City (on tour with Terrorist) when we were taken to our hotel, the promoter warned us if we saw a chick that was really pretty, it was probably a she-male. So after the show we went back to the hotel and a member wanted drugs!! So another friend called somebody and told our member- wait in the street in front of the hotel (in one of the most dangerous cities in the WORLD) the drugs were delivered & as he was going back in to the hotel he saw a pretty blonde and decided to pick HER up. So he went up and said, "Hi! What's your name?" And "she" said " Michelle" in a deep super masculine voice and our member said "ah, ok!" and RAN BACK to the hotel!!

What's the last album you bought?

Demo review: Mesmeric Revelation (2020)

Mesmeric Revelation – Demo 2020

India

Black Cum Productions

You know you're in for a treat when a band's music gets dubbed as "Kolkata Gutter Grind" by their label. The story began when I logged into facebook one day and saw that all my friends had posted this. So after listening to it I immediately purchased the cassette and had no regrets. The music can be described as blackened noise-grind in the same vein as their label peers Methgoat. The guitars on this EP are tremelo picked, backed by a massively thick, raw production filthy enough to stain the horizon. Strangely enough, for this style the lead guitars will pop up throughout the mix several times, mostly strummed high notes, brief and fitting for what you're being subjected to. The drums will stay on constant alternating blasts with the tempo not changing much except for a few short, slower parts here and there. Lastly, the vocals are drowned in reverb and echo, which gives the music an immensely evil effect, making the vocalist sound like a descendant of Kali herself. This has been on my playlist regularly since it was released. If you're a fan of Nyogthaeblisz, Chaos Cascade, or Methgoat, this will be right up your alley. Special thanks to Kolkata Inner Order Propaganda and War Vellum for all the sick music lately. (LR)

INTERVIEW: INFESTICIDE - 2020

The following interview was conducted with guitarist Isaias SpeedBlosky from Mexican Death Metal band Infesticide.

Hails. Firstly, tell us about your band name and the twisted imagery behind it.

Infesticide was created as a non-earthly plane where Death and Darkness are melting as one... If I remember correctly, I was 17 years old. I wanted a powerful and dark expression... a way to translate that incandescent madness that feeds our visions.

What can you tell us about your new opus, Envenoming Wounds, and what people can expect from it?

Utter Darkness! A total festering celebration to madness and chaos. It's a direct album, It's our vision of how Death Metal should be presented, simple as that.

What were the recording conditions like for the new record? Was there any internal pressure to meet a certain deadline? Are you pleased with the result?

It was a very analog process. We had total control, metronome wasn't used, mostly songs took just one take... We had enough time to dial guitar tones an atmospheres. The studio wasn't far away from my hometown, so it was very comfortable to capture, experiment and transmit Infesticide's aims. It was recorded between June-August of 2019 then mastered in Sweden in December of that same year. Yes! Very pleased.

What are some of your biggest influences musically? Do you have any idols?

Demolition Hammer, WASP, Morbid Angel.
Izzy Stradlin, David Bowie, Trey Azagthoth.

What's your opinion on people playing in black and death metal bands with aspirations to become “famous”?

I do not care at all! We executed our music for ourselves.

How did you manage to link a deal with Blood Harvest and how do you feel about being signed to such a killer and renowned underground label?

Rodrigo and I talked for a few days about Infesticide. He offered us a deal, then I just signed... It wasn't difficult at all. Blood Harvest understood our vision. It's the perfect label to work with.

Who did the artwork for your new album and how important is it for an artwork to represent your music? What's some of your favourite album covers?

The artwork is oil on canvas, the artist name is Carmen Grim. It represents every song title, expressing artist's perception... Altars of Madness is my favorite one.

Your previous album, Death's Formulas Fatal, had a more cavernous production and sound. What prompted the new, more straightforward approach? And also, what do you think of bands like Cannibal Corpse and Incantation that mostly stick to the same formula?

I never liked the "Cavernous" sound, DFF was recorded very primitive, basically in a bedroom... resulted adding that environ-ment feeling. On Envenoming Wounds things were different... I'm against guitar modern sound; that 5150, Mesa Dual and HM-2, EMG pickups with lower tuning, pretending to sound "heavy" I hate it with all my heart! Envenoming Wounds is a statement of how DEATH metal SHOULD SOUND! Guitar tone basically is AC/DC eq... love the sound of an overdriven Marshall amp! Those bands bore me.

What metal albums have you been feeding your brain with lately? Do you have any favorites from this year so far?

Concrete Winds - Primitive Force

Many people in bands hold the opinion that you need to be a musician in order to have a valid opinion about music. What is your opinion about that?

Everyone has an opinion you know? But earth is full of idiots... Musicians are like robots, they execute what is best for that note, that scale bla bla... there's no substance! There's no emotions anymore. And the other side you have those stupids who write reviews, throwing his point of view without even reading the lyrics! I hate them both! Fuck them both!

That should wrap things up. Lastly, what does the future hold for Infesticide?

New music very soon...
